UniVox Listener (loop receiver/loop testing device): The ideal way to hear in
looped venues if you are hard of hearing and do not have hearing aids.
The UniVox Listener combines both the
functions of a loop receiver and a loop testing device into a single
unit so you can tell at a glance whether the loop you
are listening to is working properly or not (before you blame your hearing aids or
t-coils).
Benefits:
-
Just as with any other loop receiver, the Univox Listener lets you hear beautiful clear sound
from anywhere inside any room loop or from counter loops.
-
The Listener has both a volume control and a tone control so you can
adjust it to your unique hearing needs.
-
A small blinking red light below
the speaker indicates the Univox Listener is turned on and that the batteries are
still good.
-
It is powered by two standard AAA batteries (included) which should give you 125 to
300 hours of listening pleasure, depending to the type of battery used.
-
The Listener has a standard 1/8" (3.5 mm) stereo plug on the
bottom so you can plug in your favorite earphones or earbuds
(earbuds/earphones not included).
-
An interesting feature is that the Univox Listener
also has a built in
loudspeaker so if you don't have earphones plugged in, you can listen to it
via the speaker. This is useful for a hearing person to check that the unit
is working correctly and that the loop system is putting out a loud
clear sound.
- The controls are clearly labeled on the back (see picture at right) so
you don't have to wonder which control does what.
- Always hold the Univox Listener in a vertical position.
This is because all loop receivers (including the Univox Listener) need to be oriented properly
to the loop or the signal can almost fade out. Thus, when you are wearing the Univox
Listener around your neck and you are sitting upright, it is automatically
properly oriented to a floor loop and will give a good signal. However, if you
lay back in your LazyBoy chair to watch the TV, the Univox Listener may now be
almost horizontal. Consequently, the signal may be much weaker. The fix is easy. Just position it
so it is hanging vertically again and the good signal will return. I sandwich it
between the cushions on my chair so it remains vertical.
-
The
Listener comes with a quick disconnect neck strap for your convenience. (See
picture at right.) Just wear it around your neck and forget it's there.
Weighs less than 3 ounces (80 g) with batteries installed.
- This unit is compact. It measures 4" x 2½" x ¾".
- The Univox Listener doubles as an induction loop field
strength tester. This allows you, the user, to tell whether any
installed induction loop meets the IEC 60118-4 international standards
for induction loop systems. When loop systems are installed to IEC
standards, you should be able to hear equally well and at the correct
volume anywhere inside the looped area.
-
  To
use the Univox Listener as as a loop signal strength indicator hold it
vertically at chest height and walk around inside the looped area. The
green
light indicates that the loop is working correctly and is set at the correct level (0 dB
which equals 400 mA/m).
The yellow light indicates that the loop is working, and although it is
still
functional, the level is only half the IEC standard for signal strength (e.e. -6 dB
with respect to 400 mA/m).
The white light (off) indicates the loop signal is too weak to be used,
or the loop system is not working or is not turned on.
