input. This way you can listen to two different devices at the

|
Basic Univox DLS-50 or AutoLoop System
only $179.00
|
- The basic system includes the Univox DLS-50 or AutoLoop loop amplifier, A/C
power adapter and audio patch cord.
Note 1: In order
to use a room loop (or loop pad) you must have hearing aids equipped
with telecoils or use an induction loop receiver.
Note 2: To use
the Univox DLS-50 or AutoLoop in a motor vehicle, you need a power adapter (not
included). Go to any Radio Shack store and get their 12 VDC 2A Car
Power Adapter with 8' cord—part no. 270-042 ($6.97).
|
 |
Note 3: If you have a new
flat-screen TV that doesn't have the standard RCA audio output jacks,
but instead has the new TOSLINK-style optical sound jack or a digital
coaxial audio output jack (typically orange-colored), then you will
also need a digital to analog audio converter as loop amplifiers do not
have coaxial or TOSLINK-style jacks. If your TV or Sound System uses
2-channel STEREO (Pulse Code Modulation [PCM]) audio, then the adapter you'll need is the Monoprice
Digital to Audio Converter (or equivalent) for just $36.50 (includes 3'
TOSLINK cable & wall power adapter). If you need the coaxial cable
instead of the TOSLINK cable, just make a note in the directions box in
the shopping cart and we'll substitute it. |

Click here to order the STEREO (PCM)
Digital to Analog Converter |
|
However, if your TV or sound system uses Dolby 5.1 SURROUND SOUND audio,
then the above adapter won't work. You have two basic options. First,
check your TV's menu. Many, but not all new TVs allow you to select
either standard stereo (Pulse Code Modulation [PCM]) or Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound for the audio
output. If you are not using Surround Sound, then choose the PCM option.
If you are using a Surround Sound system, then set your TV to Dolby
5.1 Surround Sound and get the Sewell D-Bloq Pro
Digital to Audio Converter (or equivalent) for just $59.95 (includes 6' TOSLINK cable & wall power adapter).
This adapter will handle both PCM and Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound.
If you need the coaxial cable instead of the TOSLINK cable, just make
a note in the directions box in the shopping cart and we'll substitute
it.

For home use, either the Univox DLS-50 or the Univox AutoLoop are typically the models of choice.
If you like to have control over the settings, choose the Univox DLS-50. If
you'd rather just plug it in and let it automatically configure the settings so
you don't have to worry about them, choose the Univox AutoLoop. To order, click on the model number of the loop amplifier you want to
order.

* The maximum length of wire in the loop varies depending whether the room is
a square (1st number) or a long rectangle (2nd number). This gives you an idea
of approximately how much wire you might need depending on the room shape. The
important things are the shape of the room and the amount of metal near the loop
wire rather than the number of square feet the loop encompasses or the actual
length of the loop wire.
Installation Guides
If you are installing a loop system in a public place, here are a
couple of signs you can print
indicating that an audio loop system is installed.
Output Devices:
|
In addition to the basic system, you will also need an
output loop of some kind. (The basic system does not include an
output loop.)
You have two choices:
|
1. Loop Pad
The loop pad is the easiest way to loop your favorite chair—just place
it under the chair or under the cushion. It has a 32 foot cord so it
will reach just about anywhere you want it to. The Loop Pad is also
ideal for looping your car—just place it under your car seat. Note: the Loop
Pad does not work by itself—it needs to be plugged into the special jack in the back of the Univox
DLS-50 amplifier.
The Loop Pad measures 15.75" x 15.75" and comes with a 32 foot (10 m)
cord. $35.95. |

Loop Pad
|
| Loop Pad "Y" Adapter If there are two hard of hearing people in the household
and you both want to hear the TV, etc. via Loop Pads, plug this "Y"
adapter into the Univox Loop Pad socket and then you can plug 2 Loop
Pads into it.
Click here to order the Univox Loop Pad "Y" adapter. $29.95. |
 |
| Loop Pad Extension Cord
If the 32' cord that comes with the Loop Pad is not long enough, the
Loop Pad Extension cord will give you another 32' (10 m) of cord to fit
even the largest room in your house. It plugs into
the special Loop Pad plug on the back of the DLS-50 loop amplifier. The
Loop Pad cord plugs into it.
Click here to order the Loop Pad Extension Cord. $14.00. |
 |
2. Room Loop
The basic system does not include the insulated wire for a
room loop. If you are hooking up the Univox DLS-50, use either 18, 20 or
22 gauge stranded wire.
The maximum
perimeter you can loop with the DLS-50 loop amplifier is about 100 feet (depending on the room
shape). You can use either a single wire loop or a double loop. Normally
the single-wire loop provides a good signal.
|
|
If you are installing a single wire loop for the DLS-50, you can
order 100 feet of 22 gauge loop wire (right) for $11.99. You have your
choice of either black or white.
If you want to install a
double wire loop, you can get 18 gauge speaker wire from Radio Shack (Part No. 278-1104 $19.79
for 100 feet (30 m) or Part No. 278-008 $12.19 for 60 feet (18 m), 75'
of 20 gauge speaker wire for $12.19 (Part No. 278-1388), or 100' of 22
gauge speaker wire for $12.19 (Part No. 278-1385).

Input Devices:
In addition to the basic system, you will also need an input device
of some kind.
You have two choices:
|
1. Microphone
Input
|
| If you want to use the Univox DLS-50 loop system to listen to people live,
you will need a microphone to input the sound into the loop system.
Almost any microphone with a 1/8" (3.5 mm) plug will work. My preference
is a
lapel microphone that clips to your clothes just below your chin. This
will give beautiful clear sound and is hands-free, but you are tethered
to the loop amplifier by the length of the microphone cord. (Note:
Microphones with either stereo and mono plugs will work in the dedicated
MIC jack (right plug), but only microphones with a stereo plug will work
in the Mic/Line (middle) plug.) |

Mono Extension Cord—(12' cord) (WCA 007)
$12.00
If you need a longer microphone cord so you can more around freely, this
12' mono extension cord works well with the above microphone. Click here to order
WCA 007 |
 |
|
If you want to use a microphone to pick up
the sound directly from the device's speakers (for example, from a TV
with no audio outputs, or from the speakers in your car), you can use
this great little round microphone (MIC 13A) that fastens to the front of the speaker by
Velcro. Put the Velcro on the mic side
(as shown) so it faces the speaker. That way
it will pick up the sound from the speaker and not all the surrounding
sounds. The mic cord is 6' long. Order this microphone for just $29.00.
|

the round microphone (MIC 13A) for $29.00 |
To give the speaker complete freedom to move up to 200 feet away,
instead of using a hard-wired microphone, you can purchase Radio
Shack's FM Wireless Microphone system (Part No. 32-1258 $79.99) and
connect it to the Univox DLS-50 amplifier via a patch cord (Part No.
42-2433 $5.99). Since this patch cord has a mono plug and the Univox
jack is stereo, use an adapter (Part No. 274-374 $2.99) between the
Univox and the patch cord. |
2. Direct Input
If you are hooking your loop system into your TV, VCR, radio or stereo,
as long as these devices have standard audio outputs (RCA jacks), you do
not need to buy anything else. Use the included audio patch cord.

"I
am really sold on the Univox 2A [now
Univox DLS-50] and would definitely recommend it as the
first choice for anyone interested in obtaining a loop amplifier for
home or portable use."— D. Bishop
"Thank you very much for
prompt delivery of your Univox 2A room loop system to me which I
received this afternoon. I have already hooked this system to my TV
without any problems, and it worked wonderfully."—H. H.
"I want to tell you my experience with the Univox 2A. My wife
has exceptionally good hearing and in the past, we always
had a problem. Either the TV sound was too low for me, or
too loud for her. Sometimes it really caused some rather
heated discussions. Last night was the first trial of the
Univox 2A. I can't tell you how happy we both are! So thanks to
the Univox, we don't see any more problems for us."—E. B.
"The Univox 2A arrived today and after quickly setting it up, I
was completely amazed at how beautifully it worked. My wife is
delighted, has stopped using ear plugs ( because of our loud TV),
and thinks we can make it through another 59 years."—A. G.
"I am happy to tell you my husband went to
my dads and got the Univox 2A all hooked up right. It works perfect!
Daddy is so pleased. It is nice to know he can enjoy the news
and his favorite shows now."—R. W.
"I read the reviews of other users of the Univox 2A and I was
still a little apprehensive. Well, I just hooked it up and I am
blown away. Sound is piping through my hearing aid (with the t coil
program on) and I can hear every word, even the commercials,
which previously were impossible. This is truly truly one of the
happiest moments I have had in many years!"—M. H.
A church installed a new loop system using the large Univox PLS-700
loop amplifier. The first Sunday it was operational, a hard of
hearing man stood up and told the congregation, "Today for the first time in 30
years I was able to hear everything that was said. It's wonderful!"—Bob
R.
After they installed a loop system in their church, a pastor
wrote, "Last night we showed the Jesus film for Good Friday
and J____ came up to me crying. She said, 'That was the
first film I have ever heard in my life.' Wow, was it ever
worth it to see and hear that."—J. S.
